[A hypothesis for pharmacologic research on GABAergic approaches in Huntington chorea]
Abstract
The recent data on the particularities of the GABAergic and glycinergic systems and on the possible excitotoxic role of the glutamatergic receptors in the central nervous system are considered in order to widen the GABAergic pathophysiological approach to the Huntington's chorea. It seems that the use of GABAergic derivatives, preferentially acting in the striatum, could be proved efficient in the treatment of the choreiform movements. The orofacial dyskinesias and the akineto-rigid syndrome could be corrected by the use of centrally acting glycinergic drugs, while the prevention of the neurodegenerative process could be achieved by GABAergic derivatives acting preferentially in the striatum or by the antagonists of the glutamatergic receptors.
