Sarcoid uveitis simulating birdshot chorioretinopathy in a child

Yuksel Sullu et al. Retin Cases Brief Rep. 2012 Winter.

Abstract

Purpose: To report a child with sarcoid choroidopathy that has a similar appearance to birdshot chorioretinopathy.

Methods: Observational case report. Review of the clinical examination, laboratory findings, and histopathologic records of a child with sarcoidosis.

Results: A 9-year-old girl was examined in a routine consultation demand in our pediatric clinic. Slit-lamp examination revealed granulomatous anterior uveitis, and funduscopic examination of both eyes revealed numerous, oval, irregular, creamy chorioretinal lesions. These were widespread throughout the fundus, except the macula, and had the characteristic funduscopic appearance of birdshot chorioretinopathy. The patient underwent axillary lymph node biopsy that showed noncaseating granulomas consistent with sarcoidosis.

Conclusion: Sarcoidosis should be considered in a child with chorioretinal lesions resembling birdshot chorioretinopathy.
