After SAC satisfaction, mitotic cells proceed into anaphase. Aurora B is transferred to the spindle midzone and establishes a phosphorylation gradient where its substrates are phosphorylated and chromosomes remain condensed. This phosphorylation gradient creates an “area of exclusion” where NER is inhibited. After complete chromosome separation, kinase substrates will no longer be under the influence of the gradient, and the phosphatase activity will prevail, enabling NER and the consequent mitotic exit.
