Formation of the initiation codon for translation of YlMHB1 by mRNA splicing. After the splicing at the indicated positions (arrows), the resulting mRNA contains two consecutive AUG codons. Either of these can mediate initiation of protein synthesis. Translation results in the same YlMhb1p sequence as reported in our published paper. The only possible difference would be an extra methionine at the N terminus of the precursor protein, if the translation starts at the first AUG triplet. Nucleotides indicated in capital letters are part of the open reading frame. The inset shows a consensus sequence upstream of AUG codons obtained from the Transterm database (G. H. Jacobs, A.
