Current opinion is that most cardiac fibroblasts originate from the bone marrow, endothelium, and/or the epicardium following myocardial infarction (MI). The study performed by Ruiz-Villalba et al. (1) identifies epicardium-derived cells (EPDCs) as the main source of cardiac fibroblasts following acute infarction. At embryonic day (E) 15.5, epithelial cells lining the epicardium migrate to the myocardial interstitial space. The undifferentiated EPDCs become activated cardiac fibroblasts upon myocardial injury.
