Conflict of interest statement

Conflict of interest statement: M.D.S. disclosed during his review of the paper by Liao and coworkers (which this Commentary addresses) that he and L. A. Simmons are coauthors on a recent paper from the A. Guarné laboratory in Nucleic Acids Research, but this paper represents work they each did independently with A. Guarné and does not represent a collaboration between L. A. Simmons and M.D.S. Although M.D.S. currently collaborates with A. Guarné, he has not and does not currently collaborate with L. A. Simmons or J. S. Biteen.

Fig. 1.
A model for B. subtilis MMR. MutS-ADP is recruited to replication forks through interactions with the replication machinery. Once recruited, MutS releases hold of the replication machinery to perform a 1D search for replication errors. After binding a mismatch, MutS exchanges ADP for ATP, recruits MutL, and then slides away from the mismatch searching for one or more strand discrimination signals.
