A model summarizing autophagic response in β‐cells and its implication according to starvation period. During starvation and subsequent hypoglycemia, the first defense mechanism of the body is to decrease insulin secretion. Goginashvili et al.4 reported that protein kinase D (PKD) activity was downregulated in β‐cells on starvation, and it evoked starvation‐induced nascent granule degradation (SINGD), localized activation of mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) and suppression of autophagy. These phenomena look appropriate, because they result in suppression of insulin secretion. As the fasting period is prolonged and the nascent granules are depleted, SINGD would stop and it might release the suppression of autophagy. Then, β‐cells will make use of autophagy for survival during extended starvation, and glucagon and/or sympathoadrenal signals carry out defense against nutrient deficiency.
