Schematic representation of the effects of post-stroke depression on recovery after stroke. Acute neural injury or the resulting disability can cause post-stroke depression, which can lead to even greater damage, and decreased motivation to participate in rehabilitation therapies. Together these factors result in poorer functional outcomes and higher mortality rates in depressed stroke patients.
