Using a new computational method (RibORF) to systematically analyze ribosome profiling data, Ji and colleagues assessed to which extent ncRNAs are translated into small proteins or peptides and report that approximately 40% of lncRNAs, pseudogene RNA and UTRs of mRNAs are translated into peptides longer than 10 amino acids. Abbreviations: aa: amino acid; lncRNA: long noncoding RNA; mRNA: messenger RNA; ncRNA: non-coding RNA.
