Abstract

As part of systematic serologic HIV screening offered early in pregnancy since 1 January 1987, a survey was carried out from 1 October 1987 to 30 April 1988 to discover the level of patient acceptability regarding the screening. Among 538 women presenting during this period with early pregnancy, 11 (2%) initially refused the examination. After discussing the reasons for their refusal, only 2 patients definitely decided against HIV serology screening. Overall, during the screening period 1987/88 2 sero-tests out of 1771 were positive. This experience thus shows a very high level of acceptability for HIV screening among the pregnant women surveyed, and also a relatively low prevalence of seropositive cases in the population studied.
