Forest plot of the risk difference of the intubation rates and mortality comparing non-invasive ventilation (NIV) with oxygen therapy in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. The risk difference of sensitivity of individual studies is represented by a square through which runs a horizontal line (95% confidence interval). The diamond represents the pooled effect size. The results suggest that NIV can potentially decrease intubation rates but has no effect on mortality.
