Figure. Associations of maternal age with birth weight, gestational age, 2-year height-for-age Z-score (HAZ), 2-year weight-for-height Z score (WHZ), years of schooling, adult height, systolic blood pressure and fasting plasma glucose concentration.
The graphs show, for each maternal age, the amount (with 95% confidence intervals) by which the outcome differs from offspring of mothers aged 20-24 years, obtained using linear regression in pooled data from all five cohorts. The p values indicate the significance of the linear trend in estimates across the age range 15-19 years. Model 1 is adjusted for sex and (for adult outcomes only) adult age. Model 2 is further adjusted for maternal marital status, schooling, wealth index, race (Brazil and South Africa only) and urbanicity (the Philippines only). Model 3 is further adjusted for maternal height, parity and (for post-natal outcomes only) breastfeeding duration.
