Abstract

Antibiotic prophylaxis reduces the incidence of febrile morbidity in women undergoing non-elective cesarean section. A randomized comparison of prophylactic single dose Imipenem, a carbapenem antibiotic with the broadest antimicrobial spectrum of activity of any antibiotic, with multiple doses Cefotaxime, a third generation cephalosporin, was undertaken in 48 women who underwent non-elective cesarean section (22 receiving Imipenem, 26 Cefotaxime). The incidence of febrile morbidity in the Imipenem group was 4.54% versus 7.69 in patients receiving multiple doses of Cefotaxime. There were non serious complications in the treated groups.
