T Cells Take on Zika Virus

Heather D Hickman et al. Immunity. .

Abstract

Although CD8+ T cells provide protection against many viral infections, their role in Zika virus (ZIKV) immunity has not been extensively examined. In a recent issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Elong Ngono et al. (2017) define antigenic epitopes determining CD8+ T cell immunity in murine models of ZIKV infection.

Figure 1.. Location of Antigenic T Cell Epitopes in the ZIKV Polyprotein
The ZIKV genome encodes a single open reading frame that is processed into ten individual proteins by host and viral proteases. Viral structural proteins are depicted in this schematic in blue, whereas nonstructural proteins are in gray. Dots below each protein indicate an individual T cell epitope derived from that protein in C57BL/6 mice. The green dot represents the immunodominant T cell epitope.
