Current issues in blood component therapy: transmission of infectious diseases
Abstract
The risk of contracting AIDS and hepatitis through blood transfusions has decreased over the past few years, thanks to a growing awareness of their natures and improved methods of blood screening. Testing blood donors for HIV antibody has greatly reduced the possibility of acquiring transfusion-associated AIDS. Routine use of ALT and anti-HBc testing will reduce the changes of hepatitis. And accepting blood only from CMV-negative donors can help prevent transfusion-associated CMV infections in susceptible recipients.
