Peripheral Arterial Disease
Excerpt
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common manifestation of systemic atherosclerosis that affects over 200 million people worldwide, particularly older adults and those with diabetes, smoking history, or chronic kidney disease. This condition results from progressive arterial narrowing, most often in the aortoiliac, femoropopliteal, and infrapopliteal segments, leading to reduced or impaired blood flow to the lower extremities.
PAD presents along a spectrum, from asymptomatic disease to intermittent claudication and chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). While many patients remain stable, a subset progresses to CLTI, which carries high risks of limb loss and mortality if not promptly treated. Interprofessional management enhances outcomes by preventing complications and addressing systemic cardiovascular risk factors.
