Schematic representation of the relationship between peri-operative cardiac risk and time from coronary stent implantation in patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery. The risk of peri-operative cardiac events falls as a function of time from coronary stent implantation (blue solid line), while the bleeding risk is generally independent of time (red interrupted line). Based on observational data, other modifiers of risk include the urgency and type of the surgery, a recent acute coronary syndrome, the complexity and extent of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), continuation versus interruption of antiplatelet therapy, as well as traditional risk factors (e.g., age, sex, renal function and diabetes).
