Figures

Figure 1
Figure 1
Inflammatory monocytes and tissue-resident macrophages in the peritoneal cavity. Under steady-state conditions (left), yolk sac-derived macrophages are the major macrophage population. Few HSC-derived monocytes and monocyte-derived macrophages are present. Upon treatment with thioglycollate and IL-4c (right), resident macrophages are partially ablated, and the remaining cells differentiate into AAMres macrophages. In parallel, increasing numbers of AAMmono cells are recruited to the cavity, and some AAMmono cells differentiate from a vitamin A-dependent cell to AAMconv, which largely resembles AAMres cells.
Figure 2
Figure 2
Inflammatory monocytes and resident macrophages in the liver. At steady state (left), yolk sac-derived Kupffer cells are the major macrophage population in the liver. Few HSC-derived monocytes and monocyte-derived macrophages are present. Upon infection with Schistosoma mansoni (right), an intrahepatic TH2 response is established, leading to the formation of granulomas surrounding parasitic eggs. Over the course of weeks, the type 2 inflammatory reaction results in the recruitment of inflammatory monocytes to the liver, and some of these monocytes differentiate to AAMconv, partially resembling liver-resident macrophages, including the capacity to self-renew.
