Abstract

The current SEARCH Study concludes that the incidence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes among youths in the United States increased significantly over the period 2002-2012, particularly in minority racial and ethnic groups. Environmental and behavioral factors play an important role in developing both types of diabetes.

Model‐adjusted incidence estimates. The model‐adjusted incidence estimates per 100,000 young people. (a) The incidence of type 1 diabetes was assessed among participants aged 0–19 years. (b) The incidence of type 2 diabetes among participants aged 10–19 years. P‐values are for the linear trend tests in each racial or ethnic group, according to the type of diabetes. The results significantly suggest a positive annual rate of increase during the study period.
