Before CI, the STC is responsive to visual speech (V) as a result of profound deafness. On the Lower Left, the results of a competitive model are depicted and in which visual (V) influences decline as auditory (A) input to the STC increases. On the Lower Right, the results of a cooperative model are depicted and in which both visual (V) and auditory (A) influences in the STC grow as experience with multisensory (i.e., audiovisual) speech increases.
