The role of neurotransmitters and opioids in polycystic ovarian syndrome
Abstract
In this article, the characteristic gonadotropin dysfunction of PCOD is discussed. The potential role of modulators such as the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine as well as the role of endogenous opiates are considered. A review of the effect of these neuromodulators is followed by speculation as to whether disordered secretion of these substances may be operative in the pathophysiology of PCOD.
