Typhoid Vaccine
Excerpt
This educational activity discusses vaccinations against typhoid, detailing their indications, mechanisms, administration methods, adverse effects, contraindications, and the rationale for use in both endemic and nonendemic areas. This activity aids healthcare providers in effectively recommending and administering typhoid vaccines when appropriate. In the United States and other high-income countries, these vaccines are typically given to travelers, laboratory workers, and individuals in close contact with patients with Salmonella serotype Typhi infections. Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure in endemic regions contribute to high infection rates. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends routine vaccination for children aged 6 months to 15 years in these areas, particularly those facing outbreaks of drug-resistant strains of S Typhi.
