The vaginal microbiome and sexually transmitted infections are interlinked: Consequences for treatment and prevention
Abstract
In a Perspective for our Collection on STI research, Janneke van de Wijgert discusses the latest on how the vaginal microbiota predisposes women to acquisition of STIs and discusses future potential for clinical intervention.
Conflict of interest statement
I have read the journal's policy and report the following competing interest: I have received vaginal probiotics free-of-charge from Winclove Probiotics, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and Biose, Clermont-Ferrand, France, for testing in a clinical trial in Rwanda. The trial itself was funded by the UK Medical Research Council, and full results were not yet available at the time of writing.
