Living cell under attack by ionic liquids (ILs). Ionic liquids can be synthesized to target specific biomolecules as (i) lipids and proteins of the cell biomembranes, (ii) proteins and organelles in the cytoplasm, and (iii) DNA in the nucleus. A deep knowledge of IL–biomolecule interactions can then lead to unprecedented applications in bionanotechnology
