Cutting the Gordian Knot of the Microbiota

Kimberly S Vasquez et al. Mol Cell. .

Abstract

The gut microbiota plays a central role in human health. Studies by Tramontano et al. (2018) and Maier et al. (2018) improve our understanding of the metabolism and pharmaceutical impact of human gut bacteria through high-throughput screening of growth in the presence of different nutrients and drugs, respectively.

Figure 1:
Interrogating the physiology of the gut microbiota. (A) Tramontano et al. and Maier et al. screened the growth of a diverse collection of bacterial species from the human gut microbiota in the presence of different nutrients and drugs, respectively. (B) Tramontano et al. identify defined media for each species, and discover conditions in which metabolites such as short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and mucin promote or inhibit growth. (C) Maier et al. identify drugs that inhibit growth, and discover mechanisms that confer resistance to both antibiotics and human drugs.
