Revision of the case definition of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome for national reporting--United States. Centers for Disease Control, Department of Health and Human Services
Abstract
Since the first case definition of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome was published in 1982, minor revisions have been made in the list of diseases used as indicators of underlying cellular immunodeficiency, and, more recently, the human T-lymphotropic virus type III/lymphadenopathy-associated virus (HTLV-III/LAV) has been identified as the cause of the syndrome. To reflect these changes, the Conference of State and Territorial Epidemiologists suggested resolutions to the case definition of the syndrome that the Centers for Disease Control will immediately adopt. These revisions will result in the reclassification of less than 1% of cases previously reported.
