(A) Mouse lung tissues harbor bacterial sequences indicating a distinct microbiome, although the density relative to background or high-microbe niches is unclear. (B) The microbiome is dynamic, and strongly impacted by environmental factors, so specific findings may be unique to a particular model and require caution in assuming generalizability. (C) The lung microbiome composition correlates with lung levels of IL-1α and IL-4, whereas oral and cecal microbiomes correlate with lung IL-4 only, indicating both lung–lung and gut–lung microbiome–immune relationships.
