Abstract

Aspiring physician-scientists face many potential obstacles. While the National Institutes of Health and private foundations must continue to invest in physician-scientist workforce development, much of the responsibility for attracting and developing future physician-scientists falls to leaders of academic medical centers. This Viewpoint provides some thoughts on how we do that.

Figure:. Increasing the efficiency of training physician-scientists
In traditional M.D.-Ph.D. programs students enter the laboratory after one or two years of medical school and complete their clinical clerkships, residency (Res) and subspecialty clinical training after completing a research thesis. M.D.-Ph.D. graduates may shorten residency training through board-approved research residency pathways. For the late bloomer, some institutions offer the opportunity to complete a Ph.D. during fellowship training. This alternative sequence could also be used to allow M.D., Ph.D. programs to shorten the time-to-independence by adopting competency-based standards for graduation from medical school and research pathways of residency.
