Ropivacaine
Excerpt
Ropivacaine is an anesthetic agent approved by the FDA for surgical anesthesia and acute pain management. Common indications include epidural anesthesia during surgeries such as cesarean sections, major nerve blocks, and local infiltration. Administration methods for postoperative or labor pain include continuous epidural infusions or intermittent boluses. Recent studies have also evaluated ropivacaine for chronic pain management. This educational activity reviews the indications, mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, dosing protocols, adverse effects, contraindications, and potential drug interactions associated with ropivacaine. Healthcare professionals can optimize patient-specific treatment strategies and improve clinical outcomes by recognizing ropivacaine’s pharmacological properties. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based administration strategies and the essential role of interprofessional collaboration in ensuring patient safety and therapeutic effectiveness.
