Progress and trends in the diagnosis of pneumonia. Since the dawn of germ theory, advances in pneumonia diagnostics have been restricted to the selective study of the microbe or the host. The study by Langelier et al. (7) points the way forward by integrating the characterization of respiratory microbiota and the host response, embracing the complexity of the host–microbe interface. In the next decade, we anticipate a revolution in point-of-care pneumonia diagnostics as point-of-care sequencing, quantification, and metabolomic assays are integrated into our experimental and diagnostic arsenal.
