We present three theoretical patterns of belief regarding benefits of ICU admission. Future characterization of patterns of perceived benefit of ICU admission as a function of illness severity may reveal patterns that provide greatest value to patients and healthcare systems, and further inform guidelines on ICU admission criteria.
