In 2018, the Netherlands Journal of Dentistry (NTVT) had been published for 125 years: reason for a systematic look at the subjects that have received attention since 2000. These subjects were subsequently compared to those in Dutch dental publications in international literature and to leading fields in oral health care. The analysis revealed an increase in the attention given to certain fields in the Netherlands Journal of Dentistry, such as public dental health, during the past 18 years and a decrease in the attention given to other subjects, such as basic scientific research. In addition, there was a limited correlation between fields involving the greatest cost of care, such as cariology and preventive dentistry, and research activity. This held true both for international publications and publications in the Netherlands Journal of Dentistry.

In 2018 bestond het NTVT 125 jaar. Een aanleiding om eens systematisch in kaart te brengen welke onderwerpen het NTVT sinds het jaar 2000 onder de aandacht heeft gebracht. Deze onderwerpen werden vervolgens vergeleken met Nederlandse tandheelkundige publicaties in de internationale literatuur én met de belangrijkste mondzorgdeelgebieden. Hieruit bleek dat in het NTVT het aandeel van bepaalde deelgebieden zoals sociaaltandheelkundige onderwerpen in die 18 jaar was toegenomen en andere onderwerpen zoals fundamenteel wetenschappelijke onderwerpen, minder aandacht kregen. Onderzoek uit bepaalde deelgebieden liet in deze analyse een sterke internationale oriëntatie zien. Daarnaast bleek er een beperkte samenhang tussen deelgebieden waar de grootste zorgkosten mee gemoeid zijn (zoals cariologie en preventieve tandheelkunde) en de onderzoeksinspanning. Dit gold zowel voor internationale publicaties als publicaties in het NTVT.
