Excerpt
Unfractionated heparin is an anticoagulant used for the prevention and treatment of thrombotic events, including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and atrial fibrillation. Heparin is also indicated for preventing clot formation during procedures such as cardiac surgery, extracorporeal circulation, dialysis, and continuous renal replacement therapy. In addition to approved indications, heparin is widely utilized in hospitals for various off-label uses.
