Paravascular efflux of Aβ via the meningeal lymphatic vessels. The flow of Aβ from the brain to the dCLNs is illustrated. (A) The efflux of Aβ (and other macromolecular wastes from the CNS) occurs uninterrupted via the meningeal lymphatic vessels; (B) efflux of Aβ is hampered in an aging brain and can be experimentally mimicked by ablation with photoconverted Visudyne; (C) alternatively, intersection with VEGF expands the lymphatic vessels. This expansion of the meningeal lymphatic vessels increases efflux of Aβ. Aβ, amyloid β; dCLNs, deep cervical lymph nodes; CNS, central nervous system; VEGF, vascular endothelial growth factor.
