IL-13-induced STAT6 activation is associated with respiratory symptom frequency and early maternal smoking in a pediatric asthma population. Nasal epithelial cells from children with mild (n=12), moderate (n=18), or severe (n=17) asthma were stimulated with IL-13, and STAT6 activation was assessed by Western Blot (A). Associations between IL-13 induced STAT6 activation and physician determined asthma severity (B), presence of asthma symptoms (cough, wheeze, shortness of breath, chest tightness) in the past 4 weeks (42 of 47 participants) (C) and maternal smoking during pregnancy and/or in the first 5 years of life (12 of 47 participants) (D) were determined.
