Genetic predisposition, advancing age, and acquired factors including cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular diseases promote AF through a variety of mechanisms, notably structural, electrical, autonomic and Ca2+-handling remodeling, leading to the generation of AF-maintaining reentrant waves and/or focal ectopic firing.
