Probability of survival of patients with sterile CSF cultures (N=64), CSF quantitative cryptococcal culture of < 70,000 CFU/mL (N=319), and CSF quantitative cryptococcal culture ≥ 70,000 (N=320). The figure, which includes all participants in ASTRO-CM pilot and randomized trials (ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01802385), suggests a similar mortality in those presenting with sterile and higher initial fungal burdens. Diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis was based on a positive CSF cryptococcal antigen. CSF=cerebrospinal fluid. QCC=quantitative cryptococcal culture.
