Hypothesized mechanism by which senescent cells contribute to age-related conditions. Senescent cells produce the Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (SASP), rich in inflammatory molecules, which in turn induce aging of the tissues and age-related diseases. TNF-α, tumor necrosis factor-α; MMP, matrix metalloproteinases; IL-1, interleukin-1; ICAM, intracellular adhesion molecules; IL-7, interleukin-7; IL-6, interleukin-6; IL-8, interleukin-8; VEGF, vascular endothelial growth factor; CCL-2, chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2; EGF, endothelial growth factor.
