The influence of dose on the long-term control of Classic (non-AIDS associated) Kaposi's sarcoma by radiotherapy
Abstract
Between 1972 and 1985, 82 Classic Kaposi's Sarcomas were treated by radiotherapy in the Division of Radiation Oncology at NYU Medical Center. Doses ranged from 650 cGy in 1 fraction to 3,500 cGy in 10 fractions, reflecting the judgement of the responsible physician. A correlation was observed between the treatment given and the likelihood of long-term response. Doses of 2750 cGy or more delivered in 10 fractions over 2 weeks, or their equivalent, were associated with significantly better long-term local control. We therefore conclude that doses of this magnitude are appropriate for the long-term care of Classic Kaposi's sarcoma.
