In mice, neutrophils freshly released from the bone marrow in the late night/early morning display a higher protein content stored in their granules and enhanced ability to form NETs. As they travel through the circulation during the day, neutrophils gradually modulate their proteome through controlled degranulation and decrease their ability to form NETs. Once they exit into tissues such as the lungs, the toxic arsenal of the neutrophils is significantly decreased and they are less capable of forming NETs and damaging tissues. These changes in the neutrophil proteome determine variations in organ damage depending on the time of day, following the circadian rhythm.

Comment on

  • Programmed 'disarming' of the neutrophil proteome reduces the magnitude of inflammation.
