Circles represent the traditional, symptom-based approach (i.e., schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and psychotic bipolar disorder). Rectangles represent biomarker-based approaches (biotypes) which are orthogonal to traditional clinical diagnoses. Such biotypes may overlap with the subtypes proposed by Liddle and may have better predictive value for outcome across psychotic disorders.
