SARS-CoV-2 binds to ACE2 expressed on human airway cells; the activation of the serine protease TMPRSS2 activates the spike protein to allow virus-cell fusion and cell entry. Regulation of ACE2 in upper airway disease and by corticosteroid treatment is largely unknown, but may offer a chance for intervention.
