Chimeric ARFs provide detailed understanding of how a minimal auxin system functions. The three domains of ARFs have distinct properties: DNA binding, target gene activation or repression and oligomerization. The work discussed here includes several domain-swapping experiments in which the authors attempted to rescue the clade-A ARF mutant, arf1–4, with chimeric ARFs. In each row, the success of the rescue is indicated (green tick for yes, red cross for no and ‘partially’ for partial rescue) next to the colour-coded ARF chimera (green, domain from ARF1; red, domain from ARF2; purple, domain from ARF3; blank, absent; yellow, AtLFY). There are two phenotypes associated with the arf1–4 mutant: a general lack of decrease in thallus growth and a total lack of auxin sensitivity. The efficacy of phenotype rescue for each is summarized here.
