Activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome by a two‐step mechanism. First, pathogen‐associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) interact with the toll‐like receptor (TLR) of alveolar macrophages leading to the induction of interleukin genes via nuclear factor kB (NF‐kB).
