Knowing the local epidemiology and bacterial resistance patterns is one of the key elements for appropriate antibiotic use in patients with cirrhosis. 1In the absence of clinical signs of infection, colonization rarely requires antimicrobial treatment. 2After taking cultures, tailoring them to the site of infection, and considering risk factors for multidrug‐resistant organisms. 3Adapted to each clinical situation and patient characteristics. 4According to the clinical situation and the microbiological results. 5Set up local teams with infectious diseases specialists, clinical microbiologists, hospital pharmacists, infection control practitioners or hospital epidemiologists, and comply with hospital antibiotic policies and guidelines.
