Haemodynamics are tightly coupled to plaque rupture and erosion. A complex relationship exists between shear stress parameters and plaque composition and stability. Proximal regions exposed to high ESSG are characterized by layered structures and inflammation, and associated with increased risk of rupture or erosion. Distal sites are exposed to high OSI and characterized by lipid accumulation, inflammation and increased risk of erosion. ESSG, endothelial shear stress gradient; OSI, oscillatory shear index.
