Epithelial-immune cross talk in the lung upon inflammation. Environmental insults induce a type 2 immune response (namely, by activating innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and Th2 CD4+ T cells), which promotes the recruitment of eosinophils and mediates tissue damage. These insults also activate the production of IL-17A by γδ T cells, which enhances the production of epithelial IL-33, as previously demonstrated during influenza infection. IL-33 induces the proliferation of ST2+ Tregs, which in turn inhibit the type 2 response, limit the accumulation of γδ17 T cells through the secretion of IL-35, as reported in a model of HDM-induced allergy, and promote tissue repair through the production of amphiregulin.
