To the naked eye, the aurora STEVE (for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement) appears colorless; the striking coloration can be captured only by skillful camera work, in the presence of a strong westward flow of charged particles. To make this composite image, Jun Wang assembled 19 exposures, each 13 seconds long, taken over the course of eight minutes.

It took the perseverance of amateur aurora-watchers and citizen scientists, particularly those in the area of Calgary, Canada, to produce and share the brilliant images of STEVE that made that aurora so famous. Here, Hugo Sanchez practices his craft under a sky full of green (non-STEVE) aurora.
