The use of antioxidant, antiinflammatory and antiapoptotic agents, as well as neurotrophic factors, contributes to retinal neuroprotection. Retinal neuroprotection will help to the success of cell- and gene-based therapies in the treatment of retinal neurodegenerative diseases, and it will counteract the oxidative stress, inflammation and cell death processes, which are common to all of them, whichever their origin is.
