Schematic diagram showing nociceptive nerve-induced enhanced egress of HSCs from the BM to the blood circulation. The neurotransmitter CGRP is produced by nociceptive neurons and binds directly to HSCs through its receptor, increasing cAMP signaling in HSCs and ultimately promoting BM egress. Increased numbers of HSCs in the blood lead to better yields for transplantation and efficient hematopoietic reconstitution. This  effect has a critical influence on therapeutic outcome and patient survival.
